This Flood Alert has been issued as we expect heavy rainfall overnight to lead to some flooding. Flooding to low lying land and roads is forecast tonight and during the early morning tomorrow, Thursday 21 October. The first flooding is expected from approximately 11pm tonight. Flooding is likely in multiple areas along rivers in the area, particularly around New Malden and Wimbledon Common. Any low lying areas near rivers could be affected. There is currently some uncertainty in where the heaviest rain will fall so some areas may only see raised river levels and no flooding. Further showers are possible during Thursday, leading to some continued flooding into the evening. Please avoid contact with flood water and be careful in riverside locations along rivers in the area. We will be closely monitoring the situation and will issue Flood Warnings if needed. Some flooding is expected to continue overnight, affecting land near the Beverley Brook. Low-lying land, roads and gardens in the New Malden area are most affected, where river levels have fallen slightly but remain high. Surface water flooding impacts have also been widely reported. Not all areas have seen the heaviest rain or subsequent flooding. The forecast will remain unsettled overnight, with further heavy showers possible. River levels will fluctuate in response to any further rain experienced, with potential for some additional flooding to take place. Not all areas are seeing the heaviest rain, flooding is only expected to affect the areas that do see heavy showers this afternoon and evening.
