Heavy rain has fallen across the Stort catchment over the last few days. This has caused levels within the River Stort to rise. The main area of concern is Harlow. Levels are now slowly reducing, but flooding to low lying land and roads close to the river remains possible overnight on Sunday 31 January and into Monday. Flooding from surface water may also remain. You should avoid entering floodwater and continue to monitor your local forecast and river levels. Further rain is forecast on Tuesday 2 February. We are continuing to closely monitor river levels in the area and have staff on standby and ready to respond. The main area of concern is currently Manuden and Clavering where river levels have risen the most. There is likely to be flooding to low lying land and roads close to the river today on Thursday 28 January. Flooding from surface water, where water gathers and flows off road surfaces, could also occur. We expect the river to remain high on Thursday. Some further rainfall is forecast overnight tonight. Most locations have seen river levels drop today Friday 15 January. In areas where they are still high, water levels have now largely stabilised and should begin to drop away today and overnight. However, some further rain and snow is forecast on Saturday daytime. Although this rainfall will be less than we have received in the last few days it will fall on saturated catchments and could cause river levels to rise again. Persistent heavy rain is expected during the evening of Tuesday 26th December 2017 and overnight in to the morning of Wednesday 27th December 2017. River levels are currently normal for the time of year and are expected to rise following the forecast rainfall. Flooding to low lying roads, land, gardens backing on to rivers and surface water flooding is expected between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, 26th to 27th December. We expect the river to remain high in to the afternoon and evening of 27th December 2017. We will be closely monitoring the situation throughout the day and this message will be updated as the situation changes. River levels in the Clavering and Manuden areas may be particularly high, with local fords becoming impassable and surface water runoff disrupting travel. The River Stort is still rising slowly in the Clavering area, however river levels have stabilised in Bishops Stortford and Sawbridgeworth. With the River Stort still rising slowly and some rain possible today, this Flood Alert remains in force. Some flooding of low lying land and surface water may still be present. The outlook for the remainder of the week is unsettled, but with less rainfall forecast than we have seen over yesterday (Tuesday 27th June) and this morning (Wednesday 28th June). We are constantly monitoring river levels. This message will be updated this afternoon.

River Stort, Stansted Brook
Throughout Tuesday 27th June we have seen heavy rainfall in the Sawbridgeworth, Bishop’s Stortford and Clavering areas. This has meant that the River Stort is now rising and is forecast to continue rising overnight. The main locations of concern are the Sawbridgeworth and Clavering areas, levels suggest that there may be flooding to low lying land and roads close to the river overnight and into the early hours of Wednesday morning. Flooding from surface water could also occur. We expect the river to rise and remain high throughout the night though no flooding to properties is forecast and warnings are not expected to be issued. Take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions. We are constantly monitoring river levels, this message will be updated tomorrow morning or earlier if the situation changes.
