This flood alert remains in force due to continuous high river levels and bank full conditions. High levels on the upper catchment affected by rainfall earlier in the week has caused a further slight rise in levels on the lower River Derwent this weekend. As the catchment remains saturated, levels are expected to stay elevated around Buttercrambe, Stamford Bridge and Elvington affecting all low lying land and fields along the riverside. Snow showers forecast over the weekend are not expected to cause any further impact on river levels, and drier conditions are expected on Monday which will allow levels to stabilise. As the catchment is currently saturated, levels will remain high for several days with flooding of low lying land, roads and fields. This flood alert has been issued in response to rising river levels as a result of combined snowmelt and heavy rainfall in the upper catchments over the last couple of days. The current area of concern is around the Elvington sluices where the upstream level is 6.2m and expected to rise slowly overnight. Levels upstream at Buttercrambe and Stamford Bridge have been rising steadily on Wednesday and will continue rising slowly overnight. No further significant rainfall is forecast in the upper catchments, however the catchments are sensitive to further rainfall and levels will remain high over the coming days.
