Groundwater
Following the heavy rainfall since the New Year, where we have seen two inches of rain in 48 hours at many locations, borehole levels across Cranborne Chase have started to rise once more. The next three days will bring some fairly unsettled weather which could produce some heavy periods of rainfall. Groundwater levels will respond very quickly under the current very wet surface conditions.
Ensure that any property level resilience measures such as pumps, flood barriers and air brick covers are in good conditions and replace any stocks of sandbags.
Avoid driving through flood water as the bow wave from vehicles can damage nearby properties.
Environment Agency staff will monitor levels daily and this message will be updated on Thursday 4th January or as the situation changes.

Groundwater
Groundwater levels have receded across Cranborne Chase. All of the indicator boreholes are falling back to more normal levels.
Check any property level flood resilience measures including pumps, flood barriers and airbrick covers that you may have in place and replenish stocks of sand bags.
The weather forecast up to the New Year indicates that rainfall totals could reach 30 - 40mm on Wednesday and into Thursday, however this is unlikely to make a significant change in the generally downward trend in groundwater levels. A colder, dryer spell will herald the New Year with a more unsettled period possible later in the month.
Environment Agency staff will monitor groundwater levels over the holiday and this message will be updated every 48 hours or as the situation changes. The next update will be on Tuesday 26th December.
Flood Alert issued on 20 Dec 2023 15:54
Groundwater
Groundwater levels have fallen back across Cranborne Chase, but levels will remain high for some time. Some minor roads, especially in valley bottoms, are likely to be flooded for up to two days after rainfall.
Check any property level flood resilience measures including pumps, flood barriers and airbrick cover that you may have in place and replenish stocks of sand bags.
The weather forecast up to the New Year is for limited amounts of rainfall which makes further property flooding unlikely until into the new year when a more unsettled period is expected.
Environment Agency staff will monitor groundwater levels over the holiday and this message will be updated every 48 hours or as the situation changes. The next update will be on Friday 22nd December.
Flood Alert issued on 18 Dec 2023 10:03
Groundwater
The groundwater level at most of the monitoring boreholes across the Chase remains high, although several have fallen back very slightly over the weekend. A frontal system will pass over the area during Tuesday morning, bringing up to 15mm of rain on higher ground, and due to the saturated nature of the catchment, expect groundwater levels to respond quite quickly. Following a brief dry period through the middle of the week, a return to more unsettled weather will return from Saturday. Homeowners are advised to check any property level resilience measures such as pumps, flood barriers and air brick covers.
Avoid driving through flood water as the bow wave can damage adjacent properties.
This message will be updated on Wednesday the 20th December or as the situation changes.

A gradual easing of conditions over the past week is likely to be reversed following a fresh band of heavy rain in the next 24 hours. We do not expect property flooding at this stage, but some roads, including Stubhampton to Tarrant Hinton, Farnham to Gussage St Andrew and Wyke Down to Monkton up Wimborne are likely to be impassable once more. Avoid driving through flood water if at all possible as your bow wave can cause damage to nearby homes. EA staff will continue to monitor the situation locally and will update this message should the situation change.

Groundwater
Groundwater levels across Cranborne Chase have started to fall back so that the risk of flooding is now reduced. The cold, dry spell will continue for the next week meaning that levels will continue to fall towards the middle of February. A return to warmer, wetter conditions from the second half of the month could bring levels back up again quite quickly. You are advised to take the opportunity to check any pumps are in good working order and that stocks of sandbags are replenished. Septic tanks may need emptying as soakaways may not work for some time. Some roads are still flooded and springs have burst through the surface causing them to break up. Rivers and streams remain full due to high groundwater levels and will react rapidly to further rainfall. Our staff will continue to monitor the situation and will update this message as the situation develops.

Groundwater
Groundwater levels have risen in response to recent, prolonged rainfall. Levels will continue to rise over the next few days and flooding of fields and some minor roads is expected. Further rainfall is expected over the coming weekend. Due to a BT fault data from the Woodyates borehole is currently unavailable online, however today's reading is 93.95 metres above sea level.
Looking further ahead next week will be relatively dry, but with the possibility of stormy conditions appearing at the end of the week.

Groundwater
Groundwater levels have started to rise in several locations on Cranborne Chase due to the wet weather experienced during the past week. Further rainfall is forecast on Monday which will see a continuation of this upward trend during the week ahead. High pressure will start to dominate in the second half of the week, producing more settled conditions. Slightly higher day time temperatures will help vegetation growth which in turn will slow the recharge of the aquifer. Pumping equipment and property level protection measures should remain in place where available as levels will remain quite high for several weeks. Environment Agency staff will continue to monitor the situation and will update this message on Wednesday 24th February or sooner if the situation changes.
Flood Alert issued on 16 Feb 2021 16:34
Groundwater
Groundwater levels on the Cranborne Chase have been receding following the dry, cold weather we experienced last week. With recent rainfall and further rainfall forecast over the coming week, we expect groundwater levels to begin to rise again. Pumping equipment and property level protection measures should be set out where available. Environment Agency staff will continue to monitor the situation and will update this message on Wednesday 24th February or sooner if the situation changes.
Flood Alert issued on 12 Feb 2021 12:02
Groundwater
Groundwater levels on Cranborne Chase have stabilised following the recent dry spell. A continued cold start to the weekend means that a combination of flood water and icy conditions will make roads especially treacherous. Pumping equipment and property level protection measures should be set out where available. Take care that pumping during freezing conditions does not pose a risk to the public. Only pump when necessary. Consider obtaining supplies of rock salt to prevent ice forming around discharge areas.
As we enter a period of warmer wetter conditions on Sunday 14th February, a gradual increase in levels is expected towards the middle of next week. Rainfall falling on frozen ground will increase the risk of localised surface water flooding. Environment Agency staff will continue to monitor the situation and will update this message on Wednesday 17th February or sooner if the situation changes.

The rate of rise will start to level off next week as a colder drier spell sets in. A combination of flood water and icy conditions will make roads especially treacherous. Pumping equipment and property level protection measures should be set out where available. Take care that pumping during freezing conditions does not pose a risk to the public. Only pump when necessary. Consider obtaining supplies of rock salt to prevent ice forming around discharge areas. Warmer, wetter weather is expected to return from the 12th February which will cause groundwater levels to resume their upward trend. Groundwater
Groundwater levels in areas on the Chalk on Cranborne Chase have risen over the last few days in response to the on going period of wet weather. Further rainfall today and again over the weekend will lead to the continuation of this upwards trend for a few days.
Residents with property level protection measures should ensure that they are prepared and are ready for use. Check that pumps are working, ditches are cleared and sandbags are to hand. As most suppliers will be closed over the Christmas period, it is worth checking stocks of fuel for generators and pumps where required. Some minor roads will start to experience flooding, septic tanks may work less efficiently. Wessex Water are closely monitoring the situation and will act to reduce the impact of groundwater leaking into the sewage system. EA staff are monitoring the situation and will update this message as the situation develops.

We encourage residents with pumps and other property resilience measures to keep them in place and ensure they are still working for the next few weeks. We are continuing to monitor the situation and will update this message as the situation changes.
