Flood Alert issued on 7 Dec 2017 15:52
North Sea
This alert is issued for the high tide along the Tyne and Wear Coast. The North East is currently experiencing relatively high tides and for the Thursday evening high tide we will experience an approximate 0.7m surge due to the Storm Caroline low pressure system. The storm will also create significant waves that are expected to lead to overtopping between 5.00pm and 8.00pm. Key locations that are likely to be impacted include the lifeboat station and marine lab at Cullercoats, Seaburn Lower Prom, Hendon Prom and Seaham Harbour and docks. This is primarily due to wave overtopping. Extreme care should be taken close to exposed coastal locations due to the risk of crashing waves. We will also be issuing the flood warning for Cullercoats and Roker. We will continue to monitor the situation and reissue this Alert for any subsequent tides if required. Subsequent tides on Friday 07/12/2017 and into the weekend are likely to pose less risk.
