This Flood Alert has been issued as we expect heavy rainfall overnight to lead to some flooding. Flooding to low lying land and roads is forecast tonight and during the early morning tomorrow, Thursday 21 October. The first flooding is expected from approximately 11:30pm tonight. Flooding is likely in multiple areas along rivers in the area, particularly around Beddington, Thornton Heath, Norbury and between Merton and Summerstown. Any low lying areas near rivers could be affected. There is currently some uncertainty in where the heaviest rain will fall so some areas may only see raised river levels and no flooding. Further showers are possible during Thursday, leading to some continued flooding into the evening. Please avoid contact with flood water and be careful in riverside locations along rivers in the area. We will be closely monitoring the situation and will issue Flood Warnings if needed. The main risk of the heaviest rainfall associated with Storm Dennis has now passed, but there remains the risk of some further isolated showers overnight, 16/02/20. River levels rose during the day today although they are now peaking and falling in some locations. Some continued flooding of roads and land close to the River Wandle in the Merton, Hackbridge and Wandsworth is possible until the early hours Monday, 17/02/20. Standing flood waters may remain in some locations. We are closely monitoring the situation and our incident room is now open. Our incident response staff are operating our defences and structures and clearing trash screens. Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses. It is currently expected that this message will be removed by 10am Monday, 17/02/2020.
