The water level in the Tanners Brook is high and rising. In the last 8 hours, 37mm of rain has been recorded in Portswood. This is a significant amount in a short period of time. From 22:00 this evening (04/01/2024), rising river levels will stop drains from operating effectively. Minor road flooding will impact streets nearest to the river. Some garden flooding is also possible. Most of the rain has now cleared the area. Water levels will remain high until 00:00 midnight (05/01/2024) but property flooding is not currently expected. Our operational staff are clearing debris screens at Shirley Pond and Blighmount Crescent to keep the river free of blockages. Over the next 1 to 2 hours, avoid Shirley Rec ground as footpaths will be inaccessible. This Flood Alert will be updated by 15:00 on Friday 05/01/2024.

Over the next hour, rising river levels will stop drains from operating effectively. Minor road flooding will impact streets nearest to the river. Some garden flooding is also possible. The river is not high at Shirley Pond, but over the next 1 to 2 hours avoid Shirley Recreation Ground as footpaths may become inaccessible by foot. Lighter rain is forecast until 15:00 so water levels will remain high until 18:00 but property flooding is not currently expected.
