Groundwater
Following the heavy rainfall since the New Year, where we have seen two inches of rain in 48 hours at many locations, borehole levels across the West Wiltshire Downs, the Vale of Wardour, Salisbury Plain and the Bourne Valley have started to rise once more. The next three days will bring some fairly unsettled weather which could produce some heavy periods of rainfall. Groundwater levels will respond very quickly under the current very wet surface conditions.
Ensure that any property level resilience measures such as pumps, flood barriers and air brick covers are in good conditions and replace any stocks of sandbags.
Avoid driving through flood water as the bow wave from vehicles can damage nearby properties.
Environment Agency staff will monitor levels daily and this message will be updated on Thursday 4th January or as the situation changes.

Groundwater
Borehole levels across the West Wiltshire Downs, the Vale of Wardour and much of Salisbury Plain continue to fall back leading to a reduced risk of groundwater flooding. Levels in the lower Bourne Valley continue to rise very slowly. The next five days will bring some fairly unsettled weather which could produce some heavy periods of rainfall.

Borehole levels across the West Wiltshire Downs, the Vale of Wardour and much of Salisbury Plain continue to fall back leading to a reduced risk of groundwater flooding. Levels in the lower Bourne Valley are still rising very slowly. The next ten days will bring some fairly unsettled weather which could produce some heavy periods of rainfall.
Environment Agency staff will monitor levels daily and this message will be updated on Friday 29th December or as the situation changes.
Flood Alert issued on 24 Dec 2023 14:49
Groundwater
Groundwater levels have fallen back in the West Wiltshire Downs, the Vale of Wardour and much of the Plain itself, however boreholes at Idmiston and Clarendon in the lower Bourne valley are still creeping up very slowly.
Check any property level flood resilience measures including pumps, flood barriers and airbrick covers that you may have in place and replenish stocks of sand bags.
The weather forecast up to the New Year indicates that rainfall totals could reach 30 - 40mm on Wednesday and into Thursday, however this is unlikely to make a significant change in the generally downward trend in groundwater levels. A colder, dryer spell will herald the New Year with a more unsettled period possible later in the month.
Environment Agency staff will monitor groundwater levels over the holiday and this message will be updated every 48 hours or as the situation changes. The next update will be on Tuesday 26th December.
Flood Alert issued on 20 Dec 2023 15:54
Groundwater
Groundwater levels have fallen back in the West Wiltshire Downs and the Vale of Wardour, but some boreholes are showing a continuing, but gentle rise further east, especially in the River Bourne catchment. By the weekend, all levels are expected to be falling slightly.
Check any property level flood resilience measures including pumps, flood barriers and airbrick covers that you may have in place and replenish stocks of sand bags.
The weather forecast up to the New Year is for limited amounts of rainfall which makes further property flooding unlikely until into the new year when a more unsettled period is expected.
Environment Agency staff will monitor groundwater levels over the holiday and this message will be updated every 48 hours or as the situation changes. The next update will be on Friday 22nd December.
Flood Alert issued on 18 Dec 2023 10:03
Groundwater
The groundwater level at most of the monitoring boreholes across Salisbury Plain continue to rise quite slowly. On the West Wiltshire downs including the Wylye Valley and the Vale of Wardour, levels have settled back a bit over the weekend.
A frontal system will pass over the area during Tuesday morning, bringing up to 10mm of rain on higher ground, and due to the saturated nature of the catchment, expect groundwater levels to respond quite quickly. Following a brief dry period through the middle of the week, a return to more unsettled weather will return from Saturday. Homeowners are advised to check any property level resilience measures such as pumps, flood barriers and air brick covers.
Avoid driving through flood water as the bow wave can damage adjacent properties.
This message will be updated on Wednesday the 20th December or as the situation changes.
Flood Alert issued on 14 Dec 2023 11:59
Groundwater
Groundwater levels at many of the boreholes used for Flood Warnings on Salisbury Plain and in the Vale of Wardour have risen following 12 weeks of above average rainfall. Despite a brief spell of drier weather groundwater levels will continue to rise over the next few days. Further rainfall, perhaps as much as 20mm is expected on Tuesday next week.
Householders with pumps and other property level resilience measures should deploy them now.
It is likely that some roads will be flooded, particularly in the Dene, Fonthill, Teffont, Till, Wylye, Woodford and Chitterne valleys. Avoid driving through flood water as the bow wave can damage adjacent property and may put your own and emergency responders lives at risk.
This message will be updated on Saturday the 16th December or if the situation changes.

Groundwater
Groundwater levels across Salisbury Plain and the Wiltshire Downs have started to fall back so that the risk of flooding is now reduced. An exception to this is in the River Bourne catchment between Tidworth and Idmiston where groundwater levels are still rising very slowly. The cold, dry spell will continue for the next week meaning that levels will continue to fall towards the middle of February. A return to warmer, wetter conditions from the second half of the month could bring levels back up again quite quickly. You are advised to take the opportunity to check any pumps are in good working order and that stocks of sandbags are replenished. Septic tanks may need emptying as soakaways may not work for some time. Some roads are still flooded and springs have burst through the surface causing them to break up. Rivers and streams remain full due to high groundwater levels and will react rapidly to further rainfall. Our staff will continue to monitor the situation and will update this message as the situation develops.

Groundwater
Groundwater levels have started to rise in several locations on and around Salisbury Plain due to the wet weather experienced during the past week. Further rainfall is forecast on Monday which will see a continuation of this upward trend during the week ahead. High pressure will start to dominate in the second half of the week, producing more settled conditions. Slightly higher day time temperatures will help vegetation growth which in turn will slow the recharge of the aquifer. Pumping equipment and property level protection measures should remain in place where available as levels will remain quite high for several weeks. Environment Agency staff will continue to monitor the situation and will update this message on Wednesday 24th February or sooner if the situation changes.

Groundwater
Groundwater levels on Salisbury Plain have stabilised following the dry, cold weather we experienced last week. With recent rainfall and further rainfall forecast over the coming week, we expect groundwater levels to begin to rise again. Pumping equipment and property level protection measures should be set out where available. Environment Agency staff will continue to monitor the situation and will update this message on Wednesday 24th February or sooner if the situation changes.

Groundwater
Groundwater levels Salisbury Plain have stabilised following the recent dry spell. A continued cold start to the weekend means that a combination of flood water and icy conditions will make roads especially treacherous. Pumping equipment and property level protection measures should be set out where available. Take care that pumping during freezing conditions does not pose a risk to the public. Only pump when necessary. Consider obtaining supplies of rock salt to prevent ice forming around discharge areas.
As we enter a period of warmer wetter conditions on Sunday 14th February, a gradual increase in levels is expected towards the middle of next week. Rainfall falling on frozen ground will increase the risk of localised surface water flooding. Environment Agency staff will continue to monitor the situation and will update this message on Wednesday 17th February or sooner if the situation changes.

Groundwater
Groundwater levels in West Dorset are set to rise further over the next few days, bringing a risk of flooding to minor roads especially in the Upper Avon, Chitterne, Wylye, Till & Bourne valleys. The rate of rise will start to level off next week as a colder drier spell sets in. A combination of flood water and icy conditions will make roads especially treacherous. Pumping equipment and property level protection measures should be set out where available. Take care that pumping during freezing conditions does not pose a risk to the public. Only pump when necessary. Consider obtaining supplies of rock salt to prevent ice forming around discharge areas. Warmer, wetter weather is expected to return from the 12th February which will cause groundwater levels to resume their upward trend.
