An updated SEVERE FLOOD WARNING has been issued for Marykirk. There is a danger to life. If you are in an affected area and are in danger and need assistance, call emergency responders. Marykirk experienced extensive flooding today, Friday, with levels on the North Esk reaching the highest on record. River levels on the North Esk are dropping on Friday evening. However, further rainfall is expected overnight Friday and Saturday. Another red weather warning for rain is in place by the Met Office. We expect the River Esk to rise again from Saturday morning. Current forecasts indicate that it may peak Saturday afternoon at lower levels than today, Friday. The ground is very saturated, and the river may respond more quickly. The railway line, cottages at Marykirk, the A937 and the waste water treatment works will remain at risk tomorrow. Aberdeenshire Council continues to operate a rest centre at Mearns Campus in Laurencekirk. Further information is available on the Aberdeenshire Council website. An updated SEVERE FLOOD WARNING has been issued for Marykirk. There is a danger to life. If you are in an affected area and are in danger and need assistance, call emergency responders. Extensive flooding is expected around the railway line, cottages at Marymill, the A937 road and the waste water treatment works. Due to rainfall caused by Storm Babet, river levels on the North Esk will rise throughout Thursday night and into Friday morning. The North Esk is predicted to peak in the early hours of Friday. River levels are expected to be similar to or exceed November 2022, the highest on record. Take action now. Stay away from flood water and do not take unnecessary risks. Please follow the advice of the emergency services and first responders on the ground. Aberdeenshire Council is operating a rest centre at Mearns Campus in Laurencekirk. However, river flows remain high and a further period of rainfall is forecast to affect this area overnght into Sunday. With saturated ground conditions, river levels can be expected to rise again on Sunday, but not to those levels seen on Friday.
