Many rivers are already at elevated levels from rainfall earlier this week and will react to the quantities forecast.

Remaining very unsettled today Tuesday 19th January, as Storm Christoph brings further heavy rain this afternoon and especially overnight into Wednesday. Rain will continue throughout Wednesday, increasing river levels further. The combination of ground conditions, existing river levels and forecast rainfall quantities gives a high risk of flooding of low-lying land until Thursday 21st January.

Further rainfall is expected to arrive in the catchment tonight on Thursday 17th December and will continue until the early hours on Friday 18th December. A further band of heavy rain will arrive Friday morning and continue overnight to Saturday 19th December. The River Afan is expected to exceed the flood alert level between 3:00 AM and 4:00 AM and a peak level is expected at 7:00 AM on Friday the 7th of December. There is still some uncertainty about the rainfall distribution over this period and therefore the timing and magnitude of flood peaks may change during the intervening period.
