This flood alert has been issued in response to heavy and persistent rainfall over recent days causing levels on the River Esk to rise. The high tide at Whitby is at approximately 4:30pm. The combination of increased river levels and high tide increases the risk of flooding particularly downstream of Briggswath and around Ruswarp Bridge where flooding of low-lying land and roads is possible between 4:00pm and 7:30pm today, Tuesday 01/10/2024. This flood alert has been issued in response to river levels rising on the lower River Esk due to heavy rainfall. Coastal locations along the North Sea are not expected to be at risk. Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Esk, with low lying land expected to be most affected, particularly around low lying land in the Briggswath area and some minor roads. Flooding is possible with river levels expected to remain high on Sunday afternoon. Heavy rainfall from Sunday morning is expected to ease in the afternoon, but river levels will remain high. We will continue to monitor the forecast and re-issue this alert if necessary. Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.
