A FLOOD WARNING has been issued for Kirkwall. A combination of high tides and prevailing weather conditions means that flooding from the sea is expected. Flooding is likely in Kirkwall around the harbour and Weyland Bay and low-lying parts of Kirkwall. Orkney Island Council may close the flood gates around the harbour. Any vehicles at the harbour or Ayre Road car park which are seaward side of the sea wall should be moved if possible and safe to do so. Please follow any announcements from the council. Flooding impacts are expected just after high tide around 13:00 today. Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property. A combination of high tides and strong gale force winds from a west to north-westerly direction, means that flooding from the sea is possible in Kirkwall around the harbour and Weyland Bay areas during the evening of 24th December. Orkney Islands Council may need to close flood gates around the harbour. Any vehicles at the harbour or the Ayre Road car park which are on the seaward side of the sea wall should be moved if possible and safe to do so. Please follow any announcements from the council https://twitter.com/OIC_Roads. Peak sea levels in Kirkwall are expected at 1900GMT with the worst of the wave overtopping expected for about an hour either side of high tide. The prevailing weather forecast, along with high tides and large waves, means that flooding from the sea is expected on both sides of Friday 13th Octobers evening high tides (these will occur around 22.45 BST). Gale Force north-westerly winds also mean that a combination of wave overtopping, spray and debris is expected to affect the low-lying parts of Kirkwall. Whilst the risk of overtopping is reducing due to lower water levels, the continuation of strong north-westerly winds, becoming northerly overnight, means that there is a continued risk of wave overtopping in Kirkwall around the harbour and Weyland Bay. Large and overtopping waves are expected and in places could cause hazardous unpredictable conditions.
